Overview of Island of the Blue Dolphins

Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins is a work of historical fiction that follows a young girl named Karana as she learns to survive alone. Based on true events, Karana is tragically left behind after the elders of her tribe decide it is time for their people to leave the island. Over the course of the next 18 years, Karana must learn to take on all the responsibilities that were once shared by her whole tribe. Karana’s story is one of inspiring determination and strength while also detailing a love for the animals and natural beauty of San Nicolas Island.
